Big Egg Podcasting Universe: Episode 8 Show Notes

Where to watch

Kumiko Maekawa vs Sugar Miyuki

Kaoru Ito vs Fumiko Ishimoto

The Rules of Kickboxing

There’s no one definitive set of rules for kickboxing because there’s no single governing body. You can find links to information about different promotions and rule sets via the sport’s Wikipedia page but here’s the Glory Kickboxing rules as an example.

Shootboxing

Shootboxing was founded in 1985 by Takeshi Caesar, who is currently the chairman of a company that’s still in business. At time of writing they actually ran a show last night. Go to Shootboxing.org (in Japanese)

Female MMA Pioneers

We mentioned some of the early pioneers of women’s MMA, having largely terrible fights as they all learn from each other and develop the form. Unfortunately, the more you research the likes of Proud Boys supporter Tara LaRosa and Gina Carano, you realise the matches weren’t the only thing that was garbage.

Nevertheless, here’s a 2009 match from Strikeforce between Gina Carano and Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino.

Anderson Silva Does Himself a Mischief

We mentioned a particularly unpleasant 2013 championship fight in which Anderson Silva managed to kick Chris Weidman so hard that his own leg snapped, giving rise to Zoë’s vivid description of “a sock full of paté”.

Read more about the impact of the injury in this ESPN feature, and of course, here’s a clip you will never unsee.

Listener questions

Do you have any recommendations for a decent decaff black tea? Since recording I’ve settled into a routine with Yorkshire Tea decaff, which is the best I’ve tried, but I’m eternally open to suggestions.

‘Sugar’ Nojima Miyuki

English-language sources are relatively limited on Nokima Miyuki and her record is difficult to confirm. We’d love to give her a more complete biography so if you have any information on her please tweet us and we’ll bring it up in a future episode.

Fumiko Ishimoto

Similarly, there’s nowhere near enough information out there on Big Egg’s shootboxer. We think she has since become a photographer – but what else do you know about Fumiko Ishimoto?
